Paquette's Camp update Feb. 4th, 2012

It is hard to tell wether it is winter or turning spring here from day to day the weather has been so iratic. It has gone from -33 degrees one morning to above freezing and rain the next day, and continues to go back and forth, there is enough snow that the lake levels whould be good in the spring. We are starting to look forward to spring but would like to get at least a month of real winter before it gets here. Ice is usually off the lake about the first week of May, with the mild winter we will see when it goes this year.

I am still doing some trapping and having fairly good luck between snowmobile breakdowns, up and running again today after the latest breakdown, I blew the chaincase the other day and had to walk back home.

It is quiet here as per usual in the winter, we do have a lot af birds to watch and have been seeing quite a few Wolves going across the lake, but none in close enouogh to worry about the dogs.

We hope that everyone is settled into the New Year and doing well.

The winter has been back and forth with weather, but it has brought lots of birds in. At times we have 100,s at the feeder at one time.

Sue and I finally got a chance for some fishing, the day was quite mmild and the fish were biting well.

Actually we had all the fish we wanted in the first 15 minutes.

Camp Update for Christmas

Merry Christmas to all, we will be having a white Christmas here. Hope that the Christmas season finds everyone well and healthy. It is pretty quiet around the camp now, I have just finshed up renovations in our house and am ready to take some time for ice fishing . It may not look like it but there is about 7 inches of ice here, although not much snow. The snowmobiles are out and the fishing gear is ready.

My trapping is wound up until we get more snow and I can get around with the snowmobile easier, and my work at the ski hill is at a standstill because of lack of snow as well. I guess we still have lots of time for winter, but it is slow coming this year.

Once again this winter we will be doing work to improve walleyspawn areas, the pile of stone is sitting in the yard and ready, this will likley be done in Mach some time , the stone will be hauled out by snowmobile and sleigh and placed on the lake to fall into place as the ice melts.
I was skeptical the first time we did it this way, but it works well and is much easier than taking the stone all out by boat.

I have a bit of a mixed bag of fur drying here, There is a Lynx, a Fox, a Marten, and a Mink, and a Beaver.

There are 70 Beavers in this picture, it takes about 1 hour to skin and stretch each one, and that doesn't count the time involved in catching the animal. Hope the prices are good.

Now that the camp is closed for the winter I have started trapping, there are about 70 beavers, 2 Lynx, a few Martens, and a Fisher in this picture, there is more in the shed drying now.

Paquette's Camp update Oct. 18fth 2011

I have just closed for the season, the last few groups in were hunting Moose and had great success.

It is time to get the water in the cabins drained and everything put away before the snow flies.
The temps went from 80 degrees last week to snow today, feels like closing time!

With the camp closing for the winter I have started my winter projects, I was out on the lake yesterday setting traps, and will be working at the local ski hill again this winter and have work there to get done before it is time to open.

I would like to thank everyone that helped to make this year another successful season and to welcome everyone back again next year!

Paul got his Moose the 2nd day of the Rifle season while hunting at Paquette's Camp, We had weather around 80 degrees durning this time.

This meant quick work taking care of it so that the meat wouldn't spoil.

Congratulations Paul, but it's about time you let someone else in the group shoot the bull isn't it.

Paquette's Camp update Sept. 13, 2011

Fall is here, we have had a couple of hard frosts here last week, and even a few snow flakes!
The leaves have turned colors and are starting to fall, it is a great time of year.

The Bear hunters have come and gone, of the 3 hunters this year, Steve shot the first bear at about 175 pounds , Dan followed shortly after with a bigger bear and Darrel finished up with the biggest bear at about 275 pounds, he also had to hunt the longest for one, but the wait paid off!

We are still fishing, but that will be winding down soon. Archery Moose hunters will be here in about a week and 1/2 and I hope to have some pictures of Moose to show you then.

Paquette's Camp Update August 20,2011

Can not believe fall is almost here, we had a great week this past one. Ryan and Michael-Ann ,Sue's oldest son and his girlfriend from Alberta were here for the week along with the rest of the kids and some neices and nephews. We got in some great fishing trips, campfires and reminising. It was a tiring week but so worth it!

I have been putting out bait for the Bears, there will be hunters here on Saturday, and they can not come soon enouogh. The Bears are eating me out of house and home. The hunters should have an excellent hunt. Look for pictures in the next couple of weeks.

Seems like the year has flown by and I find myself trying to finish up projects before we start waking up to frosty mornings, still some painting and staining to finish up that we need nice weather for. We also have a few old buildings to come down, that should make quite a camp fire.

School will start soon here , Sue still has 2 weeks left but that time will go quickly.

Hope that everyone's summer eases into fall smoothly,

While on a recent fishing trip to Paquette's Camp Shelly caught her biggest Pike ever, of course she was using her favorite Rapala just like always. She kept up toDave and I with the Walleye's that day as well. Nice fish Shelly!

Paquette's Camp update July 22, 2011

It's hard to believe the season is 1/2 over already, everything at the camp is going well. We are just on our way out of a very hot week,(just like much of the rest of Canada and the U.S.) the temperatures are supposed to go back th the 70's tomorrow. The fishing remained good throughout the hot weather, it was just a bear to stay in the boat very long at a time.

Between fishing etc. I have finished a new deck on my house and am working on improving some of the decks on the cabins. It has been too warm to get into too the projects very hard , with it cooling off I hope to be back at it this week.

This will be Emily's last year of working at the camp, she will be back in school the begining of August and be finished in the spring, she will be hard to replace.

Sue is enjoying her time off from school, we are trying to take some time for fishing etc. for ourselves while she is off, summer will be over before we know it!

This large Black Bear was sighted near Paquette's Camp while the guys were up on their annual fishing trip. The wildlife veiwing was good , with many bear and moose being seen throught out the week.

We are well into the season here now and things are going well. The weather has been cold and wet, we went from 85 degrees one day to frost that night, however the fish are still biting. I have been building decks on cabin 2 and cabin 7 this week,trying to keep up on the lawn , get the garden in, and of course knowing how short the summer can be working on the wood pile. The kids must be bored or tired of the cold weather and trying to warm up, they are coming up with projects like a makeshift sauna. I was impressed with their work on it and especially how well it worked, and the fact that they did not burn themselves moving the hot rocks into it.
(You never know what may happen at Paquette's Camp)

No this is not a tent, the kids decided they needed a sauna, so they built a tempary one. Rocks are being heated on the fire as the construction continues.

The makeshift sauna...not complete yet; we found an old canvas tent to put on top of it. Kids: don't try this at home!

Spring is finally here and we are open for buisness again. The ice went off the lake on May 8th, and the weather turned nice for a few days then. Along with the nice weather it also brought the Bears out and we had one that was a bit too freindly and had to be trapped and relocated. It is nice not to get woken up in the middle of the night by it now.

The first group of fishermen were here last week and had a good week, with decent weather and some nice fish. Everyone here this week has been fighting the wind and hardly able to fish. The wind has finally stopped this morning, I have boats sunk at the docks, things tipped over all over the camp, but at least no trees down. I think I can get the boatsd out today and get things cleaned back up.

I went out with the Ministery of Natural Resources to look at the improvements that were made to the Walleys Spawing Beds, it was nice to see that there were fish spawning in all of the areas we worked on. Hopefully we can make more improvements this coming winter (not that I want to rush winter) .

Paquette's Camp update April 9th 2011

We are starting to get nicer weather here, some of the spring birds are starting ot arrive, the Eagles are back, as well as the Crows, I have even seen a Robin. With there still being 2 feet of ice and not any open water for the Eagles to fish I have been taking them fish most mornings, it doesn't take them long to learn that the sound of the snowmobile means feeding time, they are usually on their way down at the sound of it approaching. I am starting to think about spring with about 6 weeks until I will be open again, I have several projects lined up as well as the general spring opening things. It is 50 degrees f. today and makes it feel like I should be able to get out and start on some things , but realistically there is still too much snow , ice and cold to get too much done. The Walleye season is open here until April 14th and I hope to fish most evenings between now and then, there will not be a problem having enough ice to get out on until closing this year, at this time last year the ice was gone. I hope that everyone is enjoying the feel of spring in the air and I look forward to starting to see some of you soon. Lewis
